What I help with

Emotional health: anxiety, anger, low mood and grief

Your mind won’t switch off, anger boils over, life feels flat or heavy, or loss has changed everything. I’ll help you step back from difficult thoughts and feelings and reconnect with what matters to you.

ADHD and autistic traits, overwhelm and start-stop cycles

High drive, low regulation: you take on too much, run out of steam and start again, and everyday demands leave you overwhelmed. With or without a diagnosis, I’ll help you build on your strengths and match what you take on to the capacity you have, so effort turns into steady progress.

Performance stress and burnout

Pressure at work, in business, sport or exams is taking its toll, and you’re giving everything but running on empty. I’ll help you bring your drive and your capacity back into balance, so you can keep performing well without burning out.

Coping and avoidance

Turning to food, alcohol or drugs takes the edge off in the moment but keeps you stuck. I’ll help you understand what it’s doing for you and find better ways to cope.

Self-worth and identity

You doubt yourself, feel you’re not enough, or have lost sight of your purpose and meaning. I’ll help you rebuild self-worth and self-trust, so you can be free to be yourself and reach your potential.

Relationships and family patterns

The same conflicts or patterns keep showing up with partners, family or the people around you. I’ll help you understand the beliefs and values behind them, across age, gender and generations, so you can relate in a way that works for you.

How we work together

When thoughts and feelings take over, it’s easy to lose sight of what matters to you.

Using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and my Regulation Capacity Model, I help you unhook from unhelpful thoughts, make room for difficult feelings and take practical steps towards the life you want.

I look at the whole person, known as the biopsychosocial approach: your body (physical health, sleep and energy), your mind (thoughts, feelings, patterns) and the life around you (relationships, work and support). Where we start depends on you.

Each session follows the same path, so you always know where you are and what comes next.

  1. Understand what’s happening for you

The thoughts, feelings and patterns that get in the way.

  2. Agree an outcome

A clear goal for your sessions, so you know exactly what we’re working towards.

  3. Turn insight into action

Practical tools for mind and body that you can use day to day.

  4. Review what’s changed

We look back at the outcome we agreed, see how far you’ve come and decide what comes next.

Jon Cookson, behaviour change coach

About Jon

Wherever you are right now, that’s where we start. No judgement, just compassion and a safe space to talk.

I’ve spent more than thirty years helping people through change. I trained as a psychiatric nurse in 1989, spent 15 years in the NHS and have worked as a mind-body coach in private practice since 2004. I’m trained in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), the evidence-based approach that forms the cornerstone of my psychological coaching. It helps individuals stop fighting difficult thoughts and feelings and focus on what matters to them.

I work with people at all stages of life, from young adults searching for identity and meaning, to athletes wanting to perform at their best under pressure, and business leaders who give everything at work and have little left at home. Often what keeps us stuck is the story we tell ourselves about who we should be. Together, we can change that.

Common questions

Do I need a diagnosis?

No. I can work with what you’re experiencing, diagnosis or not.

Is this an ADHD or autism assessment?

No. I’ll get to know what’s going on for you so we can plan our sessions, but it isn’t a diagnostic assessment.

How do I get started?

Send a short enquiry. I’ll be in touch to talk about whether my approach fits.

Do you work with alcohol or drug problems?

I help with the patterns and feelings that drive using food, alcohol or drugs to cope. If you’re physically dependent or need detox support, please speak to your GP first. I’m happy to work alongside that support.
